Why is Water Different in Playa del Carmen?

The Yucatán Peninsula sits on highly porous limestone. Much of our freshwater comes from underground sources, where water naturally interacts with limestone and minerals.

As a result, homes in the Riviera Maya commonly experience mineral rich water. You may notice the effects as white scale around faucets, spots on the shower glass and fixtures, or buildup on surfaces that regularly come into contact with water.

Water quality can also be influenced by what happened between the municipal supply and your faucet.

Many properties in Playa Del Carmen use a cistern (cisterna) to store incoming water and a rooftop tinaco or other storage and pressurization system before that water reaches the home’s fixtures. This makes the way the water is stored, maintained and treated within the property an important part of the overall picture.

What is the White Buildup on My Faucets and Shower Glass?

One of the most noticeable water issues in Playa del Carmen is white mineral scale.

As water evaporates, dissolved minerals can remain behind on shower doors, faucets, sinks and other surfaces. Over time, this can create stubborn deposits and make bathrooms and kitchens more difficult to maintain.

Mineral rich water can also affect plumbing fixtures and water using appliances over time. This is one reason some homeowners choose to treat water at the point where it enters the house rather than addressing individual faucets separately.

Whole Home Filtration vs. Reverse Osmosis: What’s the Difference?

These two systems serve different purposes, and in many homes they can complement each other.

Whole Home Water Filtration

A whole home water filtration system treats the water before it is distributed throughout the property.

Depending on the treatment system and the specific water conditions it is designed to address, whole home treatment can help improve water quality throughout the house from showers and sinks to laundry and kitchen use.

Ósmosis inversa

Reverse Osmosis (RO) is typically used to produce purified drinking and cooking water at a specific point of use, most commonly the kitchen.

For families accustomed to buying and carrying garrafones, an under sink RO system can provide purified water directly from a dedicated kitchen faucet.

Do I Need Both Systems?

Not necessarily.

The right solution depends on what you want to improve.

If your main concern is drinking and cooking water, a reverse osmosis system may be the appropriate starting point.

If you’re concerned about the water used throughout the entire property, including showers, bathrooms, fixtures and appliances, whole home treatment addresses a much broader part of the homes water supply.

Some homeowners choose both: whole home treatment for the water entering and circulating throughout the property, combined with reverse osmosis for dedicated drinking and cooking water.

What About Cisterns and Tinacos?

Water storage is an important consideration in Riviera Maya homes.

Because water may spend time in a cistern or tinaco before reaching your faucets, regular inspection, cleaning and maintenance of these storage systems are important parts of managing household water quality.

A filtration system should not be viewed as a substitute for maintaining the homes water storage infrastructure. The two work hand in hand.
